Municipal Police Officers may be required to handle as many as 25 calls per shift, averaging 25 minutes each and occupying 10 hours and 24 minutes of a ten and a half hour shift. Unless it happens to be a slow day, little time is left to identify and address community concerns.
This relentless demand forces many agencies to route incoming calls to any available officer, whether within their assigned area or not. At times, lower crime areas are stripped of services, leaving them even more vulnerable to criminal opportunists and predators.
